Multimodal Technologies and Interaction
Multimodal Technologies and Interaction

Multimodal Technologies and Interaction (ISSN 2414-4088) is an international, multi/interdisciplinary, open access, peer-reviewed journal which publishes original articles, critical reviews, research notes, and short communications on this subject. MTI focuses on fundamental and applied research dealing with all kinds of technologies that can acquire and/or reproduce unimodal and multimodal digital content that supports interaction (e.g. human–computer, human–robot and animal–computer). Such technologies may produce visual, tactile, sonic, taste, smell, flavor or any other kind of content that can enrich consumer/user experience.

Our aim is to encourage scientists to publish experimental, theoretical and computational results in as much detail as possible, so that results can be easily reproduced. There is, therefore, no restriction on the length of the papers.

Media Theory
Media Theory

Media Theory is an independent, online and open access journal of peer-reviewed, theoretical interventions into all aspects of media and communications. Resolutely international and interdisciplinary in scope, the editors encourage submissions that critically engage with the theoretical frameworks and concepts that tend to be taken for granted in national or disciplinary perspectives.

Although the journal privileges an emphasis on theory, the editors are not only concerned with theory for theory's sake. Rather, we are interested in how theoretically-informed and -engaged interventions can contribute to the interpretation of empirical research and critique, as well as to the deprovincialization of theoretical debate - helping us understand, rather than dismiss or describe, objects of critique, and making us reconsider the validity, efficacy and legitimacy of our own particular methodological approaches.

With that in mind, we are keen to stretch the definition of 'media', and to receive articles that critically debate the necessity of an emphasis on 'theory', or which prefer to emphasise 'theories' or 'philosophy' instead. As an open access journal, we would also like to provide a forum for debates on open access, peer-review and the future of academic publishing.

FormAkademisk - Research Journal of Design and Design Education
FormAkademisk - Research Journal of Design and Design Education

We view the concept of design as a generic term in line with Herbert Simon, who says that ‘... everyone designs who devises courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones’ (Simon, 1969, p. 55). This broad approach enables research with varying approaches to design to be brought together into one all-encompassing community, including object design, interaction design, architecture, landscape architecture and design education from kindergarten to the doctoral level. The journal wishes to promote design and design education from a perspective of sustainability.

This does not mean that the journal excludes work from other perspectives. On the contrary, it is open to a wide range of topics, methods and perspectives. This breadth of thought also exemplifies the expectations of the journal’s readers, and those submitting contributions to the journal should keep this community in mind. However, while many schools of thought are embraced, contributions are expected to be of high academic quality and will be submitted to a rigorous, systematic peer-review process.

The journal is aimed at those involved in design research as defined by the higher education system in Norway and the Nordic countries. Our purpose is to present cutting-edge scientific insight in a form that is accessible to all who might benefit from this information. We also aim to bring new life to this field of research by providing overviews of high-quality literature and free access to the journal’s own articles.

Pūrātoke Journal of Undergraduate Research in the Creative Arts and Industries

Contained within, beneath or behind (depending on the particular spatial metaphor you prefer when engaging with digital artifacts) are examples of excellent research undertaken by undergraduate students as part of their studies. And this statement makes reference to the overarching mission of this journal: to showcase the breadth and excellence of original research being engaged with by undergraduate students, a fact that is only slowly being recognised by some international tertiary environments and one that we ignore at our peril.

Pūrātoke is an online, peer-reviewed journal, dedicated to the publication of high-quality undergraduate student research within the creative arts and industries. The journal welcomes academic articles and creative research outputs from all creative disciplinary areas. All submitted work will undergo a rigorous peer-review process, based on initial editorial screening and evaluation by two or three anonymous referees. Papers and creative submissions may be based on work that has been produced for assessment during a student’s degree but will only be considered if the assessment has been completed.

FIELD | A Journal of Socially-Engaged Art Criticism
FIELD | A Journal of Socially-Engaged Art Criticism

We are living through a singular cultural moment in which the conventional relationship between art and the social world, and between artist and viewer, is being questioned and renegotiated. FIELD responds to the remarkable proliferation of new artistic practices devoted to forms of political, social and cultural transformation. Frequently collaborative in nature, this work is being produced by artists and art collectives throughout North, South and Central America, Europe, Africa and Asia. While otherwise quite diverse, it is driven by a common desire to establish new relationships between artistic practice and other fields of knowledge production, from urbanism to environmentalism, from experimental education to participatory design. In many cases it has been inspired by, or affiliated with, new movements for social and economic justice around the globe. Throughout this field of practice we see a persistent engagement with sites of resistance and activism, and a desire to move beyond existing definitions of both art and the political. The title of this journal reflects two main concerns. First, it indicates our interest in a body of artistic production that engages the broadest possible range of social forces, actors, discursive systems and physical conditions operating at a given site. And second, it signals a concern with the questions that these projects raise about the “proper” field of art itself, as it engages with other disciplines and other modes of cultural production.

How do these practices redefine our understanding of aesthetic experience? And how do they challenge preconceived notions of the “work” of art? For many in the mainstream art world this opening out is evidence of a dangerous promiscuity, which threatens to subsume the unique identity of art. As a result this work has been largely ignored by the most visible journals and publications in the field. At the same time, an often-problematic concept of “social engagement” has become increasingly fashionable among many museums and foundations in Europe and the United States. There is clearly a need for a more intelligent and nuanced analysis of this new tendency. However, it has become increasingly clear that the normative theoretical conventions and research methodologies governing contemporary art criticism are ill-equipped to address the questions raised by this work. FIELD is based on the belief that informed analysis of this practice requires the cultivation of new forms of interdisciplinary knowledge, and a willingness to challenge the received wisdom of contemporary art criticism and theory. We seek to open a dialogue among and between artists, activists, historians, curators, and critics, as well as researchers in fields such as philosophy, performance studies, urbanism, ethnography, sociology, political science, and education. To that end the journal’s editorial board will include a diverse range of scholars, artists, historians, curators, activists and researchers. It is our belief that it is only at the intersections of these disciplines that can we develop a deeper understanding of the cultural transformations unfolding around us.

Critical Studies in Improvisation
Critical Studies in Improvisation

Critical Studies in Improvisation/ Études critiques en improvisation is an open-access, peer-reviewed, electronic, academic journal on improvisation, community, and social practice housed at the University of Guelph. The editorial and advisory boards are made up of leading international scholars spanning diverse disciplines.

While improvisational music has historically been analyzed within specific musical disciplines, what distinguishes the research profiled in CSI/ECI is its emphasis on improvisation as a site for the analysis of social practice. We contend that improvisation demands shared responsibility for participation in community, an ability to negotiate differences, and a willingness to accept the challenges of risk and contingency. Yet improvisation is a contested term. Its cultural significance is in dispute both in the academy and in the broader public understanding. CSI/ECI seeks to reveal the complex structures of improvisational practices and to develop an enriched understanding of the social, political, and cultural functions those practices play.

We are particularly interested in historically and contextually specific articles that interrogate improvisation as a social and musical practice, and that assess how innovative performance practices play a role in developing new, socially responsive forms of community building across national, cultural, and artistic boundaries.
